Fever is condition where the temperature of the body is elevated beyond normal limits. The normal temperature of the body is 98.4 F. when it rises above this level, there is fever. Slight fluctuations are not of any great consequences, but if it rises above 100, there is cause for certain amount of anxiety. Heat is produced by the body in various ways, particularly by muscular tissues. Most of the heat is lost by the skin. The chief cause for fever is the presence of toxins in blood, may be of bacterial or viral origin.
Stages of fever
- The initial stage when the patient feels colds and it may last for few minutes to hours. The coldness starts in the back or extremities and may spread to all parts of the body. There may be vomiting, constipation or headache.
- The patient feels the hotness in this stage and the coldness begins to subside and is often accompanied by delirium. The pulse is full and rapid. The stage last for 4 to 10 hours.
- In the stage of defervescence the temperature falls, perspiration is profuse and if the patient has headache it reduces and the patient is relieved of the fever.
Fevers can be classified broadly into two groups.
- Acute or relatively short duration such as colds, influenza, pneumonia etc.
- Chronic fevers such as tuberculosis

Homeopathic management of fever
- The patient should be in bed rest to conserve his energy.
- Provide him with light diet and plenty of fluids like barley water. Solid food can be given with the advice of physician.
- A fluid diet based on milk should be given at the peak of fever. If milk causes indigestion, it may be peptonised.
- When the temperature is controlled, bread and pudding can be given.
- Fruit juices with glucose can be given if the fever persists for several days.

Aconite 30:
Symptoms: Aconite can be used to cure fever due to exposure to cold, anxiety, restlessness, rapid pulse.
Aconite is commonly used in initial stages of all fevers except Malaria and Typhoid. Aconite is of no use after first 24 hours of fever. Aconite can be given at 30 minutes or 3 hours intervals.
Belladona 30:
Symptoms: violent headache, puffed face, sore throat, injected eyes. Headache is worse when lying down and will be better when keeping the head high.
Belladona is short acting remedy like Aconite. It is generally indicated in teething troubles of children.
Bryonia 30:
Symptoms: intense thirst, hard and dry stools, bitter taste, vomiting, dry cough, difficulty in breathing. All the symptoms are aggravated by body movements. The temperature fluctuates and there is great irritability and delirium.
Gelsemium 30:
Symptoms: trembling, dullness, dizziness, profuse urination
There is aggravation of symptoms when exposed to sunlight, damp weather and when thinking of his ailments. The patient feels better by bending forward and he fear to make any effort in anything.
Pulsatilla 30:
Symptoms: chillness, creeping sensation, profuse sweat, no thirst. This is valuable remedy for intermittent fevers and suited for women.
