Alternative remedies for Cough

This is very common condition affecting people of all ages. The air passage of the lungs is lined with mucus producing cells which usually entrap particles of dust. Mucus secretion increases once the cells get infected and air passage is irritated. Coughing is an action by which excess mucus is expelled. Coughs are classified into 2 categories, acute and chronic. Acute cough is defined as one that been there for less than 2 weeks. Chronic coughs are those present for more than 2 weeks. The supportive remedies for this disease prescribed here are supposed to be taken sternly under medical supervision and just written for informational purpose.

Home remedies

Many home remedies are found useful in the treatment of cough. Almonds are useful fro dry coughs. Almonds soaked in water for an hour and remove the brown skin. Ground it well to form fine paste and add 25 Gms of butter and sugar. Take this paste 2 times a day. Onion juices mixed with honey and keep it for 5 hrs before using it first time. Take it twice daily and prepare the mixture daily till the cough is cleared. This cough syrup makes an outstanding home remedy. Roast and powder the root of turmeric plant and take it twice daily and it is excellent for dry cough.

Homeopathic remedies

Bacillinum 200: This is highly beneficial for those who are suffering from frequent coughs and colds. Initially it can be taken once a week and after the doctors advice can be changed to once a month.

Blatta orientalis: This is an excellent remedy for whooping cough. 5 drops each of mother tincture can be given 3 times a day.

For chronic coughs and colds: Bryonia 30c and Ipecoc 30c, mix them separately in a cup of water and take1 teaspoon from each as a dose. If you feel better after 2 doses then continue for other two doses or else consult the doctor.

Biochemic remedies

Kali mur: This is a good remedy for cough and 3 x dosage is preferable. Kali mur is often followed by cal sulph. Dosage should be taken in empty stomach and 3 times a day as per the doctor's advice.

Ayurvedic remedy for coughs

There are 3 types of cough as per the Ayurvedic medicine

Kapha cough: This is characterized by solid or slick mucus of clear or white color and an occasional cough. Avoid dairy, cold water and fruit juices. Pepper, dry ginger or chitrak are beneficial.

Pitta cough: yellow phlegm, dryness of mouth and a burning sensation in the throat. Ghee is handy to pacify the burning sensation of throat. Honey mixed with powdered lotus seed is beneficial.

Vata cough: frequent dry cough, burning sensation in the chest and heart, dryness in the mouth and gruffness. Licorice, shatavari, ash-wagandha, marshmallow and comfrey root are prescribed.

Siddha medicine:

Practitioners have claimed that Siddha medicines are effective in treating chronic coughs.

  1. Milk without fat + crushed ginger can be taken
  2. A teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed with the milk is helpful.
  3. Honey + 1 teaspoon ginger juice with a pinch of salt can be taken 3 times a day.
  4. Boil tulsi leaves in a cup of water. Drink it twice daily.

Unani medicine:

Justicia adhathoda basaka is a highly effective unani medicine which is being used in the form of decoction for cough. It can be used in tincture form for coughs. The familiar name for this shrub is Gau zaban or Cow tongue because the leaves of the shrub look like tongue of the cow.
