How EU is tackling Maritime 'externalities' in the light of policies?
With reference to externalities EU is not as much concerned as it is about shipping emissions. This is conspicuous from those promises that EU has been making since the initiation of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Similar promises have been made by the EU when it used to have long talks with the International Maritime Organization. Some of those promises were to include ship emissions in the form of carbon to include in the Kyoto Protocol - still unregulated, letting down the Green transport campaigners by not providing them with any sufficient measure to restrain CO from polluting our oceans and marine environment. Apart from these promises, despite so many policies it seems EU is vulnerable enough to charge those ships that pollute the harbors and provide no particular account for dumping in the wastes and debris. When EU was asked regarding pollution caused by the ships, it simply answered that the measure has already been taken as Canadian-Scandinavian ports take action against emission sensitivity issues. Therefore EU does not feel any need to work on this issue "from the scratch". Marine life is getting affected by the radioactive emissions and oil spillovers day by day, killing fishes and sea animals and exploiting the fossils.
Russian researchers reveal that 70% of our oceans are polluted; this pollution contains harmful repercussions for the living beings, which include man as well as sea life. Marine environment produces toxic wastes due to which each year millions of fishes and other sea animals are affected. Up till now thousands of sharks, dolphins and turtles have been killed by the so called 'illegal' dumping of plastic on the beaches. The balance of plants and animals near and on the seabed is disrupted by the litter in the form of oil, industrial wastes and radioactive debris. Our food supply depends upon the marine life existence and our health requires purity - pure food free of chemical hazards of polluted environment. Of course sea transport is to be held responsible for the situation, but more than that who would make EU responsible for what is going on under their nose. No accountability!
